Have you set up tourism sustainability monitoring tools?

Monitoring tourism sustainability, despite its importance, is faced with some difficulties. There are some knowledge gaps of policy-making processes as well as data gaps on tourism that need to be bridged. Towards addressing such challenges, some of the MED Sustainable Tourism Community’s modular projects have developed tools and solutions that can be of particular usefulness in the Mediterranean context and our role is to locate them and transfer them to those in charge so that they can be used in our region as well.

Do you have ways to reduce the negative impacts on the environment, culture, social?

In recent years there is much greater awareness on these issues and especially in dealing with the negative effects of tourism on the environment and culture, given that our area has many archaeological sites and monuments. One of the most important projects of the last period regarding the environment is the establishment of a waste management body in our region. Regarding the culture and social many efforts are made with the restoration of historic buildings, the recuperating of traditional crafts and local traditions and the maintaining of the local identity and culture.

What measures do you recommend ensuring responsible and sustainable growth?

Measures that will lead to environmental respect by both visitors and operators, which means minimizing the environmental impacts of tourism and socio-cultural respect by both visitors and operators, where interactions with local communities are encouraged.

What governance mechanisms do you propose?

The Hellenic Tourism Organization and the Ministry of Tourism are responsible for drawing up the strategies and identifying those mechanisms that will contribute to the promotion of sustainable tourism with minimal negative effects.
